A Food Holiday Calendar page has been added. All of the National Food Holidays are listed in calendar order with links to specific recipes for that specific Food Holiday. Some days have more than one recipe listed, so you have more than one way to celebrate!

Listed below are this week’s and last week’s posts. You can jump to any of the recipe posts by clicking on the recipe titles.

This Week’s Posts

Bee Sting Cake

This beautiful cake is a delicious treat. Instead of traditional cake batter the cake is made with a yeast dough. The yeast dough is risen until doubled then pressed into a spring form pan. Next a mixture of sliced almonds, honey and sugar is spread on top of the dough before baking. The baked cake is sliced in half and layered with homemade custard. Once refrigerated the cake is ready to serve.

Ham & Cheese Spinach Puffs

This delicious recipe can be a part of any Mother’s Day brunch. Sheets of puff pastry are rolled out and cut into squares. Then a filling is made with shallots, flour, milk, cheese, salt and pepper, spinach and diced ham. Next the filling is placed on the puff pastry squares and topped with more cheese and ham. The corners of the puff pastry are folded up to meet in the center. After chilling for 30 minutes the pastries are baked until puffed and golden.

Parmesan Spinach Mushroom Pasta Skillet

This pasta recipe can be a delicious side or entrée. Sliced mushrooms are sautéed in a skillet then garlic and broth are added to the mushrooms before removing from the skillet. Then spinach is added to a skillet and cooked until wilted. Next cooked pasta is added to the spinach with the mushrooms. Parmesan cheese, olive oil and Italian seasonings are stirred into the pasta and vegetables. The cooked pasta is served with additional Parmesan cheese.

A quote, a comic and a plan

“I’m going to break one of the rules of the trade here. I’m going to tell you some of the secrets of improvisation. Just remember—it’s always a good idea to follow the directions exactly the first time you try a recipe. But from then on, you’re on your own.” – James Beard

Sometimes, you have to try a recipe to realize how to change it to your liking. I change a lot of what I cook, I look at the original recipe for inspiration, then tweak things from there. Sometimes it’s a small changes, sometimes it’s a drastic change. But I’m always willing to try a new recipe and I hope you will too!
